Sunday April 5th. – Lent 2009

Today is a significant part of Lent, it is Palm Sunday and represents the beginning of Holy Week. For the context of Today, take the time to read Mark 11:1-11 and consider.

Today represents the day when Jesus entered Jerusalem on a humble donkey and the people received him as a King, laying their cloaks and leafy branches they had cut in the fields on the ground before him. Those who went ahead of him and those who followed shouted:

Sharia Law Partly in Pakistan

After negotiations with pro-Taliban fighters, the government of Pakistan has agreed to institute sharia(Islamic law) in the Malakand region, a predominantly conservative Islamic area that has often demanded that sharia be implemented in the area due to the fact that they believe the prevailing form of law takes too long to bring justice.

Critics are seeing it as pretty much handing over land to the Taliban, a concession that some believe could have catastrophic results and cause ongoing problems.

Also, as part of the deal, government troops will refrain from launching military operations in the area.

What Can You Trust These Days? (Video)

A lot of trickery happens on TV, so I thought I would share a wonderfully funny video with you to illustrate that point. Some people who look like they are intrepid travellers braving the elements really aren’t ;)

Discovery Channel, that’s just brilliant… really brilliant.

I hear this guy’s show is really good. I might have to take a look some time.

Israeli Election Draws Near

Israelis are set to go to the polls in what is a hotly contested election race that sees the party leading the current coalition, Kadima, and the opposition Likud party running very closely to each other in the polls.

Kadima is lead by Tzipi Livni, the current Foreign Minister. Likud is lead by Benjamin Netanyahu. Both people have very interesting backgrounds and family history.

The Israeli government is about coalitions. To quote Al Jazeera:

Indian Lunch

This isn’t something I will normally write about, but since it was my first experience of a lunch outing with a TEAR Fund team, I thought it was worth giving you an inside peak.

When chatting with Steve (the Executive Director) prior to me taking up the role as TEAR Fund’s Education and Advocacy Manager he had sometimes mentioned an Indian place where he likes to eat. Being a fan of Indian food, I was looking forward to giving it a go sometime. Today we did just that.

Finding Beauty in Urban Grit

Finding Beauty in Urban Grit

This article is a departure from the norm of this site, but I found the images in this article at www.smashingmagazine.com so moving and inspiring that I had to share them. I love looking at design and imagery. By far the more gritty stuff captures my attention and imagination the most.

Often we think of beauty in terms of cleanliness; stuff that is sanitized and “non offensive”. Beauty is often defined by clean lines and clean colours, but beauty can also often be found in the dirt and grit of our very real world, a world where we often need to engage forms of decay and even death in order to discover life, freedom and a beauty that encompasses all the layers of our world.

Distributism for the 21st Century

Distributism for the 21st Century

by Richard Aleman.

After more than a century, attempts to apply Capitalism and Socialism have met with the same disastrous outcome. A select group possesses everything while the majority is either bound to stale and declining wages, or worse, they slide from poverty to destitution. One model achieves this by appealing to individualism, while the other to collectivism. Yet for all their superficial differences, Capitalism and Socialism have much in common. Both bar the laborer, who produces the goods of society, from the means of production. Both discount the role of justice, restrict true freedom, and consolidate power. Both take for granted the materialism of man to the exclusion of his eternal soul.

World Race – A Life Changing Experience

Twenty-somethings Embark on Journey of Self-Discovery and Service

Hundreds of twenty-somethings, compelled by issues of social justice and simple living, are leaving the comfort of their homes and possessions for a year to travel the world and serve others. They’re calling it a modern-day pilgrimage – an opportunity to find themselves and live amongst the poor.
