Preparing Our Hearts for Easter: Day 5 – Being a Voice for the Voiceless
In the lead up to Easter we will be putting up a new lent devotion each week day. These devotions will also be available in the discussions section of our Facebook page and will be played on New Zealand’s Rhema.
You and I have a voice, the ability to speak and be heard, to say something and be listened to. What are we using that voice for?
As we prepare our hearts for Easter, let’s give a thought to the things we raise our voices about. So often we lift our voices in complaint or thanks about things that directly affect us and we do so at many levels – in our homes, our work-places, our communities and our nation.
It doesn’t take much of a look to see people who have no voice – those whose voices go unheard – children, the disabled, the poor, the mentally ill, the immigrant, the homeless, the victims of domestic violence and so many more.
The wisdom of Proverbs calls us to do something for these people. Proverbs 31:8-9 says this:
“Speak out for those who cannot speak,
for the rights of all the destitute.
Speak out, judge righteously,
defend the rights of the poor and needy.”
Christianity has a tradition of lifting up the causes of those who cannot speak for themselves. We as individuals have a part to play in that, looking beyond raising our voices over things that affect us and turning our attention to raising our voices in support of the voiceless, those who otherwise would not be heard.
Find a group or person that could benefit from the volume you could create around their need and find ways to champion their cause – letters to newspaper editors, blogs, contacting politicians. Become an advocate for the voiceless – be a voice for someone else.
Pray
Jesus, give us the courage we need to speak on behalf of those who are not heard.
Amen
