Allow us to introduce you to two great games.
Most sites aimed at helping people to understand different humanitarian problems are very heavily geared towards readers (including this one). They present information that needs to be read. Not all people learn in this way though. For that reason, there are various online games you can now play to understand such situations better.
Jonathan Read from Filmguide alerted The Humanitarian Chronicle to one geared at helping people better understand the Darfur situation – Darfur is Dying. Check it out.
Also, another great information site to follow to get the latest news on places like Darfur, is the website of Mia Farrow. Mia Farrow is a well known actress and was listed in the 2008 Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People edition, for her work in the Darfur situation. Her website is an outstanding resource.

Great! It’s great to think that children are being able to develop an awareness of such issues in a way that will hold them in good stead to make a difference as they grow up.
I agree – the game has prompted a few questions and been a good trigger for discussion. Interestingly in the Darfur game, my daughter soon asked “but I chose to be a kid and they’ve died, what do I press to get their next life?” Had to remind her it was representing reality… a sad reality.
Wow. Isn’t it amazing how such a fact – if they go to fetch the water and die, they’re actually dead – can be communicated to a young person by such a small thing in a game.
